Philosophy

According to popular belief, on one occasion Alexander the Great of Macedonia, king of one of the greatest empires ever, wanted to visit Diogenes, the only philosopher of that era who had not gone to see the great warrior. It was an unexpected meeting for Diogenes. When Alexander found himself face to face with the wise philosopher he opened the conversation by saying: “I am Alexander the Great”; and the philosopher replied, “And I am Diogenes the Cynic”.  Alexander then asked him in what way he could serve him, that he would grant it immediately, to which Diogenes responded: “You can stand out of the way, as you are blocking my sunshine”.  Alexander, it is said, was so impressed by his grandeur that he went away remarking: “If I were not Alexander, I would wish to be Diogenes”.
